Traditional Lemonade

Cooking Light,. '10 Things To Know About Lemons'. N.p., 2015. Web. 6 Aug. 2015.

Feature Ingredient: Lemons

Lemons are yellow oval citrus fruits native to Asia. They have acidic juices consisting of 6% of citric acid, giving them a sour taste that is used for both culinary and cleaning purposes. Culinary uses include toppings on pancakes, lemon meringues, marinading fish, among countless other options. The acidic juices also make for good short-term preservation of foods that tend to turn brown quickly after cutting. E.g. artichokes, apples, avocados. The juice can also be used as a cleaning agent, and we often find many "lemon" cleaning products in supermarkets. Today we'll be using lemons to make a simple and quick lemonade, a very popular American summer drink.

Recipe: Traditional Lemonade
Serves 6
Recipe derived from here.
Ingredients:
6 large lemons
4 cups of cold water
2 cups of hot water
1 cup white sugar

Method
  1. Juice 6 lemons and pour the juice into a jug.
  2. Add the sugar into the hot water and stir with a spoon to allow the sugar to dissolve.
  3. Add both hot water and cold water into the jug and combine with the lemon juice.
  4. Leave in the fridge overnight or for at least 2 hrs. Add additional ice and lemons to serve.
I used the recipe to make a smaller batch - the lemon juice.

The lemonade was really refreshing and had a good balance of sour to sweetness. If you find the drink is too sweet or too sour, you can always add more lemon slices or sugar, respectively. Adding some more ice to the already cold drinks add to keeping it cool the whole time - perfect for a hot day. I'd recommend serving this at a lunch or BBQ, where the flavours can really cut through the "heavier" tasting dishes.
